In August of last year, I accepted what would become the most challenging and simultaneously rewarding job of my life! I signed on to be the Content and Communications Manager for sofi.health — an early-stage startup in data technology and consumer health.

While it’s safe to say there have been plenty of ups and downs along the way, now — just over 10 months into my job — I’ve come to know the ropes pretty well. And while all new adventures (or ventures) are bound to come with a learning curve, there are a few things to note that can help anyone interest in the startup world feel that little bit more prepared…

7 Things You Should Know About Working For An Early-Stage Startup

1. Office Hours? What Are Those?!

Not only do the regular clock-in, clock-out hours of a 9–5 not apply when it comes to working for an early-stage startup, but that exciting line we look forward to — the one that differentiates the work week from the weekend….

Yup. That’s practically non-existent.

The inconvenient reality of a startup is that just because that week has come to an end, doesn’t mean the workload has. With startups, especially bootstrapped ones, working weekend can sometimes be the thing that counts the most. The mentality here is that just because the rest of the corporate world seems to take a break for 2/7 days of the week, doesn’t mean a startup necessarily has the luxury to.

Without working hands to run the behind the scenes, things can very quickly fall apart. People don’t stop buying, or scrolling on the weekend, so why should we stop selling and promoting what it is that we do?

What it is that we always do.

No 9–5 office hours in sight, I’m afraid.
